How to increase open rates

May 9, 2022

Are you looking to increase the open rates of your emails? You’ve come to the right place.

Finding creative ways to encourage recipients to open our emails is one of the challenges we face as business development professionals and email marketers. We need to look at the analytics and acquired insights from there if we want to keep our open rates high.

The sender’s address and subject line are the two most essential aspects that influence whether or not people open your emails. According to research, 45% of the subscribers report that the sender’s address determines whether or not they open an email; and 35% of email recipients open an email based on the subject line.

In this article, we will provide you with some pointers on how to improve the open rates of your emails.

Sender’s address

If we put ourselves in the shoes of email recipients who are getting emails from an automated email system, a dead-end no-reply address would not pique their interest. The human touch, on the other hand, would motivate a response if the sender’s address included a real person’s name. This is because it is hard not to listen when someone is attempting to convey a message. Another study has also proven that using a real person’s name rather than a generic email address or company name can raise open rates by up to 35%.

Therefore, rather than sending emails from an automated email system or with merely your company position name such as ‘admin’ or ‘info’, we recommend using the personal name of a customer sales representative or the communication employee who is sending the emails. Additionally, emails from the founders can be effective too. It demonstrates that the company genuinely cares about their customers and offers the recipient a sense of importance.

Subject line

Play around with the subject line and see what you can come up with. Subject lines that are short and engaging will entice recipients to open your emails. People have even attempted to use song lyrics and a play on words involving the titles of well-known novels. The results were fantastic! Hence, if you have a sense of humour, you are the luckiest person on earth. Use your wit to create hilarious and enticing subject lines to increase your open rates!

Another thing to bear in mind is that the ideal subject line length is between 6 to 10 characters or roughly 9 words. The majority of emails are usually read on mobile phones rather than computers. Hence, you will be disadvantaged if your subject line is longer than that because the subject line will likely get cut off when viewed on mobile devices, wasting all of your time and work. At one glance, the recipients need to be able to figure out what the email is about or discover a reason to read it.

It’s also a good idea to personalize the subject line. You might refer to a past encounter the recipient had with your firm. This will show that you know who they are and will stimulate their interest.

Try these tips and we wish you all the best in your marketing endeavours.
